A Snapshot of Public Health in El Salvador

You know how the saying goes... a picture is worth a thousand words! So, I've attached five photos below that will hopefully yield some insight into the public health issues facing El Salvador. Many thanks to Tess, Nikki, and Chris for allowing me to use their photos :)

Snapshot #1 - Combating HIV/AIDS

During the Anti-Domestic Violence Against Women demonstration, we passed by the billboard shown above. As this photo illustrates, there is a significant effort to increase awareness throughout publicity campaigns.

Snapshot #2 - Privatization of Healthcare

Across the street from Zulema's house is a gigantic mural persuading the people to protest against the privatization of healthcare.

Snapshot #3 - Trash Disposal
In both Altos de Jardines and San Salvador as a whole, we've all noticed a lack of trash cans and, as a result, trash along the sides of the roads everywhere.

Snapshot #4 - Visiting the Clinic!

In the community of San Roque, Circulo Solidario maintains a health clinic that contains basic equipment, some medications, and fundamental health education material.

Snapshot #5 - Alcoholism

Although this is not directly related to public health, I thought this photo was interesting. During our visit to El Museo de Antropologia, we stumbled upon this sculpture; according to the plaque, the work of art represents the experiences of a recovering alcoholic. Alcoholism is a major health issue in El Salvador and much of Latin America, as well.
